My First Fencing Tournament
Hey Guys!! I just wanted to let you know that I had my first ever fencing tournament. It was
super fun. As I stepped into the room, I could smell a win.  As I stepped onto the mat, I felt a success. I was the only girl to compete for my age group. The 12 yr olds! I won all my matches besides one hard one. I won silver for girls and bronze for all around (There was another girl but she was older and won). It was a great experience for me. Please ask me more questions!!! This will help a lot!!!

Whenever he says to the right, that's me. I beat that kid 5-1. You had to get to 5 to win. I had a lot of tricks up my sleeve. I always did a beat attack.

What Is Fencing?

As I read my suggestions from viewers, I've seen that they want me to just talk about what fencing is. Here you go viewers! Fencing is the 2nd fastest Summer Olympic Sport in the World. There are three types of fencing, Foil, Epee, and Sabre. I do Sabre by the way. "Fencing is the martial art of fighting with blades." Fencing came from the medievil times when knights and kings fought for women, money, food, etc. Next, you have to wear a lot of protective clothing. "One glove for the weapon arm with a gauntlet that prevents blades from going up the sleeve and causing injury, as well as protecting the hand and providing a good grip." You can see here that you have to wear a glove on the hand your holding the sword with.  You have to wear a jacket to protect you, a glove, and a mask to protect your face. Last but not least, let me tell you some of the techniques of defense and attacking.
  • Attack: A basic fencing technique, also called a thrust, consisting of extending the sword arm to declare an attack and attempt to land a touch upon the opponent's valid area. In sabre, attacks are also made with a cutting action.
  • Feint: An attack with the purpose of provoking a reaction from the opposing fencer.
  • Lunge: A thrust while extending the front leg by using a slight kicking motion and propelling the body forward with the back leg.
  • Beat Attack: In foil & sabre, the attacker beats the opponent's blade to gain priority (right of way) and continues the attack against the target area. In épée, a similar beat is made but with the intention to disturb the opponent's aim and thus score with a single light.
Now let me tell you defense of fencing:
  • Parry: Basic defense technique, block the opponent's weapon while it is preparing or executing an attack to deflect the blade away from the fencer's valid area and (in foil and sabre) to give fencer the right of way. Usually followed by a riposte, a return attack by defender.
  • Riposte: An attack by the defender after a successful parry. After the attacker has completed their attack, and it has been parried, the defender has the right of way for a riposte.
  • Counter Attack: A basic fencing technique of attacking your opponent while generally moving back out of the way of the opponent's attack. Used quite often in épée to score against the attacker's hand/arm.

My Fencing Camp Experience
I learned so many things at my fencing camp that I want to share my experience with you! First, when I started my fencing camp, we had to do many push ups and killer drills. I thought my arms were going to fall off! Next, my instructor showed us footwork. Some of the footwork was advancing, retreating, and lunging. Then, we learned about the history of fencing and what type of swords there are. Some of the history was in the medieval times when men would duel over women using their swords. Why would men want to fight over us strange women? All the different types of swords in fencing are Saber (I do this one),Foil, and Epee. In addition, we had to put on a lot of fencing gear. We put on a jacket, glove, helmet, and grabbed a saber. At this point I felt like Darth Vader! Then we had to salute before every match. Also, we would play games to improve our fencing skills. My fencing camp was amazing! I'm so excited to learn more skills!

The picture above is me in my fencing gear.

The video above is me in my fencing camp. The video above does not show at your school but check it out at your house. Sorry for the inconvenience!! I'm also the one in the pink shorts with pink tennis shoes.

Years ago I loved Star Wars and I liked playing with light-sabers. Hi, my name is Rio Teuber and I'm 12 years old. Let me tell you how I got started with fencing. I would always love to have duels with my friends or even my dad. Just the past 3 months, I started a fencing camp. I learned the basic attacks and blocks. After the camp ended, I just loved fencing. Now I have just started another fencing camp, it's more advanced than what I learned before. I guess Star Wars put me on the road to liking the wonderful sport of fencing.
